Solid wood flooring planks are made from a single piece of timber. There are no veneers just the warm natural wood, we have oak, walnut, bamboo and everything in between. The timber is milled, and is either kiln or air dried to carefully control the moisture to prevent warping. Real wood floors are also sold with different “grades” which help to establish the final look of the floor, the higher grade the fewer the defects, for example knots in the wood.

Firstly there are finished and unfinished timbers. Unfinished wood offers the most options for you to choose the colour of the final stain, but do take into consideration, the floor has to be sanded before staining and the stain has to dry, so the room will be out of action for a few days. A finished timber has a factory applied stain and once installed the room can be used immediately.

The final seal to the wooden floor is also very important, a lacquered floor is finished with an acrylic varnish, this gives the floor a beautiful sheen and makes the floor easy to clean. An oiled finish gives a more natural look, but depending on the wear and tear and the traffic over the floor, you may need to re-oil the floor at some point in the future.
